Established in 1990, the Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE), is an innovative science education program that introduces students to the excitement of scientific discovery and builds bridges between school and real-life biosciences. The program provides teachers with professional development and education materials and loans research-grade equipment to high schools in 16 countries all at no cost.
ABE has a strong focus on developing and advancing opportunities for underserved and underrepresented populations to access, engage and succeed in pathways to bioscience. For example, 54% of participating schools in the United States serve low income student populations. The program is currently available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong SAR, Ireland, Italy, Mainland China, Mexico, Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Singapore, South Africa, Türkiye, the United Kingdom and the United States.
In 1990, Amgen scientists and high school educators in the Thousand Oaks community, where Amgen is headquartered, collaborated to establish the Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE). The goal was to introduce students to the excitement of scientific discovery. Today, the program remains true to the same vision. ABE supports teachers around the world with high-quality professional learning experiences, implementation resources and access to a global community of practice. As science advances, ABE continues to evolve with challenging and relevant content. Thoughtful localization of curricula and program evaluation enable us to continuously measure progress with our program partners. In collaboration with LabXchange, simulations and additional virtual learning resources make it easier than ever for students to have authentic educational experiences in biotechnology.
Independent studies show that students exposed to ABE have significant and substantial learning in biotechnology and increased interest and confidence in doing science and biotechnology. Experience ABE for yourself! Click on the links to access online and classroom resources.
